3. Vanguard Airlines Boeing 737-100 "1963-1970"

In 1964, after the early success of the 727 program, Boeing was looking for a plane that would be comfortable serving the mid-sized city market. Their idea was to take the 727, shorten it, and reduce it to two engines. Little did they know, they would soon be looking at the Boeing 737, the best selling airplane currently in commercial service.

Vanguard Airlines was an early proponent of the 737, which if made, would provide the airline with the ability to better serve their markets in the Southeastern and Southwestern United States, which at the time were riddled with growing small to mid-sized cities. Vanguard placed an initial order for 15 737-100s, later growing the order to 25, and adopting the 737-200 which came a short time later. Line number two (originally N7105V) was delivered to launch customer Vanguard Airlines in late February of 1968 and it, along with the other 737-100s, spent most of their time flying across the American Southeast from Memphis, New Orleans, and Houston. 737 #2 was retired in June of 1993, and after a period of storage at Mojave, it would be relocated by truck to Memphis in 2002, after the Vanguard Airlines Flight Museum secured it to be displayed alongside VG's first Boeing 747. With a cosmetic restoration completed by the middle of 2003, it was unveiled in it's delivery colors, as pictured here.

50 years later, the Boeing 737 continues on strong, having adorned nearly 10,000 type orders, and with the 737MAX program, propels well into the future. Vanguard Airlines' 737 operations continued to grow, and the airline presently operates a combination 737-700, 737-800, 737-900, 737-900ER, 737 MAX 8 and 737 MAX 9, with MAX 10s to be delivered in the near future.
