Embraer E120 Andes Express

Andes Express is a Colombian passenger and cargo airline founded in 1987, based at José María Córdova International Airport . It initially flew 2 Jetstream 31 turboprops. They started to expand rather quickly in 1990, when the first 737-300 came. They still operate them today, but as a cargo aircraft. By 1997 they had 20 aircraft and even started 757 flights to New York. All went well until September 2008, when the aircraft shown above crashed into a mountain landing at Reyes Murillo Airport. The aircraft had been descending to land after a flight from its then main hub, Olaya Herrera Airport. As the pilots descended, they became confused with the aircraft's FMS since they were not properly trained fly the E120. As a result the distracted pilots let the aircraft descend below the Minimum descent attitude. The terrain warning, which would have alerted the pilots to climb, didn't sound because it had been faulty and was disabled. The plane hit the mountain and killed the 17 occupants.
After that incident Andes Express was heavily criticized and worked hard to give better training to its pilots. They also modernized the airline fleet. Now the airline is one of the safest in South America.
