2-1 | Sierra Pacific | Douglas DC-10-10 | 1974-1993

In the beginnings of the ‘70s, Sierra Pacific would begin to bid for a part in the ever growing American transcontinental market. Sierra Pacific would commonly find itself fighting with the Civil Aeronautics Board for the approval of longer routes. The DC-10, nicknamed the Sunliner by airline staff, would become Sierra Pacific’s main transcontinental workhorse with its reveal in San Francisco in spring 1972 in an all new livery, ushering in a new period in Sierra Pacific’s history. The DC-10 series would be employed on Transcontinental routes across the US, along with flights on the burgeoning Transpacific market. The aircraft type would proudly serve with the airline until eventually being replaced on transcontinental routes by the 757 upon its release, and on international routes by the MD-11 and 777-200 by 1999. Sierra Pacific still owns one DC-10-30, now converted into the centerpiece of the Sierra Pacific Flight History Museum in San Francisco.
