In late 1995, at President Eduard Shevardnadze's initiative, Georgian Airways was placed fully under government ownership, eliminating any private-sector influence over the airline. A previously arranged order for four Airbus A321-131s was expanded with two additional aircraft, leading to a total of six being delivered in 1996-97. Shown here is the fifth one, 4L-YEE, wearing the 1995 livery first introduced on the Fokker F70. With the arrival of the A321s, three out of the five Tu-154Ms operated by the airline were retired, with the new Airbuses being used both to replace them on some routes, and to introduce new destinations. Overall, the new A321s were deployed on a variety of routes, including regional ones like Yerevan, Beirut, and Tehran, post-Soviet capitals like Moscow, Kiev, and newly-introduced Astana (now Nur-Sultan), and European cities like London or Paris (a new destination). Additionally, Georgian Airways' A321s visited New York several times, operated for the Georgian government to transport representatives to the UN. This included Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili's attendance at the 51st, 52nd, and 53rd UN sessions in 1996, 1997, and 1998, respectively, plus Deputy Foreign Minister Malkhaz Kakabadze's visit to the 20th UN special session in the summer of 1998. All six A321-131s delivered to Georgian Airways were configured with twelve business class recliners in a 2-2 configuration, and 163 economy seats in a standard 3-3 setup, for a total capacity of 175.
