Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 flight across the Atlantic captivated the interest of the public. This fascination with flight inspired the Oklahoma Air Tour of 1928. Sponsored by Oklahoma’s Chamber of Commerce, aviators flew to various towns across the state to further inspire interest in aviation.

Among these aviators was an entrepreneur named John Alden. He had founded an air charter company the year prior called John Alden Air Company, but a lack of demand (mostly due to the fact that it was reserved exclusively for the company’s own investors) forced him to sell the company and its assets.

In 1930, Alden tried again, convincing investors to fund the purchase of a brand-new Lockheed Vega (Top Center). The airline flew its first flight between Oklahoma City and Tulsa on June 26th. Initial success led to Alden acquiring another Vega the same year. In 1933, the airline won a contract to fly air mail between Chicago and Dallas. By this time, the airline had acquired a total of five Vega’s.

Above are the company’s Vegas. None of these aircraft were ever painted in a single standard livery, though NC8493 (Top Center) and NC8495 (Bottom Right) shared the same general pattern.
