Omanwings | Boeing 737-300 | A4O-AB | 1994-2003

Following the liquidation of Oman Airways International, the flag carrier of Oman, in November 1992, a large part of the airline's assets were bought back by the government, to be used for the creation of a new company. This airline, named Omanwings, was formed in 1993 to fill the gap left by OAI. Its initial fleet was 2 ATR 42s and 4 737s, split equally between the -300 and -400, delivered new from Boeing from an order made by OAI prior to its bankruptcy. Its inaugural flight, OW001 to Dubai, took off on March 5th, 1994.

In its first years Omanwings was a small airline, not surpassing 20 aircraft in its fleet until 2005. Before adopting the connecting airline role, it served a mix of short and medium-haul routes from its Muscat hub covering the local demand. Its first livery featured colors reminiscent of the national flag, cementing the airline's flag carrier status. The logo features a falcon, a characteristic species in the area, also associated with superiority and class, representing some of the new airline's primary goals. This initial branding only lasted until 2003, when management felt like the significant changes Omanwings was undergoing at the time would require a renewed public image.

The first 737 delivered to Omanwings, A4O-AB helped the company immensly throughout its first years. The 737-300 was the mainstray of the 90s era fleet, operating with a configuration of 8 Business and 120 Economy Class seats on flights across the Middle East, Northern Africa, Western Asia and Turkey. AB remained with the airline until 2005, being one of the first 737 Classics to depart the fleet. Since its tenure with Omanwings it has found itself flying for various operators across the globe, and is currently going strong at 26 years old, operating cargo flights in Colombia.
