As the need for short range wide-bodies with dense seat configurations grew, Hellenic National ordered DC-10-10s to fill said role, operating on busy European routes. The first DC-10 was delivered in 1973 in the preceding livery. Further smaller quantities of DC-10-30's were received in the mid 70's after being leased from Vanguard to cope with international routes, as it provides the range necessary for flights to North America and Asia. Satisfied with the performance of the Intercontinental DC10s, the fleet was enlarged after an order of -30's in the early 80's.
The DC-10 proved to be a reliable workhorse for Hellenic, serving until the early to mid 00's through albeit at lower quantities after the retirement of the -10 in the early 90's. The fleet was later gradually replaced by the 767-300ER and -400ER
