By the mid-1950s, MidAmerican was one of the strongest players in the American market, and the most reliable link to Asia. Fleets of Boeing 377 Stratrocruisers and Douglas DC-6s traversed the Pacific on a daily basis, linking cities such as Manila, Hong Kong, and Tokyo to Seattle, Chicago, and New York. With a thriving regional network in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest, MidAmerican was looking for the next big thing to expand its intercontinental presence, and found its answer in the Boeing 707, placing orders for 12 aircraft in 1956.

MidAmerican's Jet Age began with a bang when it received its first Boeing 707 in March 1959, shocking the residents of suburban Chicago with its screaming JT3D engines and sleek metal frame. The Boeing 707 carried nearly double the passengers as its predecessors, and after the introduction of the -320B variant, allowed for non-stop service between the mainland U.S. and Asia for the first time.
MidAmerican's Boeing 707s were regulars at airports across North America and Asia, with limited appearances in Oceania and Europe before their retirement in 1978. The 707s were also famous for operating MidAmerican's military and R&R charters during the Vietnam War, being a common sight at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon for flights throughout East Asia and the Pacific
