In 2004, with the country and the aviation industry steadily on the path of recovery from 9/11, Global Airlines took delivery of its first Airbus A321. Most 757s that had been stored in 2001 were returned to service in 2003-2004, and with the A321 replacing the 757 on many shorter routes, service on long-and-thin routes into both Europe and South America was ramped up using the superior range of the 757-200s in the fleet, especially those with ETOPS and HGW certification, which had previously been wasted on shorter domestic flights. The newer A321s also took over many routes from A320s, which - together with A319s which at this time in the airline's history were both being delivered new and returned into the mainline fleet from the failed Global Premier experiment - in turn took over service from 737-300s and 737-500s which could then be retired. The full order for 50 Airbus A321s would be delivered by the end of 2012, and all 737s also left the fleet by that time.
