Finland became a member of the EU on 1 Jan 1995; in conjunction, as the country's flag carrier, Norden introduced a new, "modern" branding shortly afterwards. Kontio was the first aircraft to wear the new scheme.

Norden operated fifteen MD-11s, with the first being delivered in 1991 to replace aging DC-10s. All airframes in the fleet were upgraded to MD-11ER standard in 1996-97 to boost their MTOW and range. The fleet was slowly phased out of mainline passenger service beginning in 2007, with the last being retired in 2011; five were converted to freighters and retained as part of Norden's cargo division, while the rest were sold.
