The 1970s were a transitionary period for Valtair, and not in a beneficial way - multiple oil crises in the 1970s had driven up operating costs, and by the end of the decade Valtair was now operating a fleet of 10+ year old DC-9s. The airline had remained just around the break-even point financially since 1972, and this trend continued into the 1980s, with the 1979 oil crisis plus competition from a crop of new airlines sprouting up in Scandinavia leading to Valtair's market share decreasing further. With the airline trending towards posting a significant loss in 1980, Valtair was sold in September to a consortium headed by the Quattuorventos Group, which subsequently embarked on a rebranding and modernization campaign for the airline.
Soon after the Valtair name was officially no more, with the airline renamed Norden Airways OY effective February 18th, 1981. While the airline's color palette remained largely similar, a new livery and logo were introduced, with the logo based on the whooper swan (Finland's national bird). In addition, while the airline's newer DC-9-30s were retained, the now nearly 20 year old DC-9-10 and -21s were sold and replaced with brand new MD-82s, allowing the airline to retain type commonality with the earlier DC-9 variants and save on training costs.
