Aernat, known at the time as Aer Náisiúnta, took delivery of its first transatlantic airliner in 1948 - the Lockheed L-749 Constellation. Four of these airliners were delivered and were intended to be flown on transatlantic routes, but this service didn’t start due to lack of government support and financial issues.
Meanwhile, Aernat instead focused on re-building its Continental Europe routes, with services to Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, London, Manchester, and Paris within the next decade.
By 1955, Aernat had finally grown enough to begin trans-atlantic services. It acquired five Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellations and began services to New York from Dublin and Shannon.
However, at the dawn of the jet age, the piston-powered “Connies” were becoming obsolete. The last of the L-749’s were retired sometime in 1958 and the L-1049’s in 1962.
