Ilyushin Il 86

Ilyushin Il 86

The addition of the Il-86 to the fleet in 1982 was supposed to usher in a new era of long range, high capacity flying to destinations such as Buenos Aires, Toronto, and London, England. However, the development promises were never met on this aircraft, leaving Aerolineas Cubanas with a short range widebody, and very little use for it. These aircraft flew briefly to Toronto, Canada, before their safety certification was revoked in North America.

They were relegated to service from Havana to Mexico City, and Caracas, before being unceremoniously returned to the Soviet Union in 1988.

They were supplemented by Tu-154 and second hand Il-62 aircraft for long haul routes, before finally being truly replaced by the Il-96 in 1994.
