Norden's history begins in 1954. Originally named "Valtair" after Finnish aviation pioneer Valto Karhumäki, the airline was founded shortly after the opening of Helsinki-Vantaa in 1952 and began scheduled services from the airport in 1954, operating a small fleet of secondhand Convair propliners. Initially the airline's operations were limited to flights around Scandinavia, but by 1960 Valtair's CV-440 Metropolitans flew as far as London.
