In 1988, Hanseatic placed an order for the 747-400, aimed at replacing it's aging 747-100 and 747-200 fleets. The 747-400 (and 747-400M) would become the mainstay of the long haul fleet, serving alongside the A340 from Berlin and Munich, operating to every continent served by the airline. Introduced in September 1990, the 747-400 made its first flight on DH440 to Houston-Intercontinental. The 747-400 would be the flagship of the fleet until the introduction of the Airbus A380 and 747-8. The 747-400 is estimated to be retired by 2022. A total of 31 (18 -400s, 13 -400Ms) 747-400s were operated by the airline at its peak level of service.
D-ABVM is named for Bremen.
