Silai Afghan Airlines was founded in in 1953 as a venture between the Afghan Government and Pan Am, which provided surplus Convair CV-340 aircraft and pilot training to begin domestic flights and international flights to Pan Am stations in the region, such as Delhi and Tehran. In 1956, the airline received two Douglas DC-4s to begin service on the Marco Polo route, flying from Kabul to London with stops in Kandahar, Tehran, Damascus, Beirut, Ankara, Prague, and Frankfurt. Since then, the airline has rode out several wars, regime changes, hijackings and bombings, and societal changes, but continues to be an important link and symbol of Afghanistan to the world.
Silai's modern-day fleet consists of Bombardier CRJ aircraft, Boeing 737, Boeing 757, and Boeing 767 aircraft, with an average fleet age of 20.7 years. The airline has appealed to the Afghan Government to renew and expand its fleet with secondhand ATR, Boeing 737, and 767 aircraft, but is still awaiting a decision.
Very interesting!
