The 747-400, the largest aircraft to serve in Global Airlines' fleet, was first delivered in 1991, beginning operations with crew training flights between New York and Los Angeles in spring of that year, followed by an introduction into 'real' service to London Heathrow in June. Configured with 39 Sleeper First seats, 58 in Business Class, and 376 in Coach, it could carry a combined total of 473 passengers all the way from New York to Hong Kong (which was the longest route ever served by the airline, though in the winters the outbound was operated via Seoul due to headwinds). Notably, the 747 featured a strange Business Class arrangement, with 44 seats on the upper deck, and a measly two rows in a seven-abreast configuration placed awkwardly between First Class and Economy.

Shown here is N722GA, the 22nd 747-400 delivered to Global Airlines. It joined the fleet in 1997, and was in fact the last aircraft to be delivered wearing the 1985 livery. It continued to fly with the airline until 2016, when it was sold to Global Air Finance Co and leased briefly to Air Australia, before being stored once again in 2019. In total, Global Airlines operated 33 747-400s.

To avoid the J capacity being less than on the MD-11, while not decreasing the F capacity.
