Salz Flug is a relatively minor airline based in Salzburg, Austria. It was founded in 2013, operating at first three, then five Airbus A319s out of Salzburg Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart International Airport, the second-largest international airport in Austria. Realizing the potential the small carrier had, Vienna Airlines (Austria's flag carrier) established a strategic partnership with Salz Flug in 2015. Apart from the codeshare and interline agreements created as part of this partnership, Vienna Airlines also purchased an A330-200s which was due to be retired by Royal Dhahrani Airways, and leased it to Salz Flug. The aircraft was configured with 27 Thompson Vantage business class seats in a staggered configuration and 243 economy class seats.

After some crew-training flights to London and Frankfurt, this aircraft was used to inaugurate thrice-weekly service to New York on January 27, 2016. Salzburg is a major touristic, cultural, and skiing center, and as such demand was sufficient to begin service to Chicago and Shanghai soon after. This led to two more A330-200s being acquired in the same manner as the first towards the end of 2016, and Salz Flug now operates long-range routes to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Bangkok, Shanghai, and Tokyo, as well as seasonal routes to Sint Maarten, Malé, Phuket, and Mahé.
