Founded in 2002, staraustralia aimed to fill a gap that existed in the Australian aviation market, the lack of a true low-cost carrier. The airline launched with a fleet of 7 A320-200s, flying from Sydney. The first flight, 4A1001 to Melbourne, took off in the morning of June 16th, 2003. Ever since, the airline has been on a steady path of growth. It has opened up bases in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Gold Coast and Auckland, and has focus cities in Adelaide, Cairns and Christchurch. The low fares staraustralia offers have driven general pricing in the markets it operates down, while the LCC has opened up air travel for a lot of Australians, as well as foreigners seeking a cheaper way to get around the country.

staraustralia has grown vastly to a fleet of 122 Airbus airliners. This includes 24 A319s, 57 A320s, 18 A321s as well as 23 A330-200s used for long-haul services to Asia, as well as Honolulu, Hawaii. The A321s were ordered in 2010 along with the A330s, and were initially meant to replace older A320s, but the airline elected to use them for expansion as the market grew. The first A321 was delivered in July 2013 and was put to service on the shuttle service between Sydney and Melbourne.

VH-SQD is the 13th A321 delivered to staraustralia. It was delivered on December 16th, 2013 and entered service the following morning on the Gold Coast-Perth route. Like all A321s, it is configured with 230 seats in an all-Economy Class layout.
