Vanden Air Transport Airbus A340-500
Airbus A340-500 | SE-BBC
Rolls-Royce Trent 553A2-61
Delivered to Vanden Air Transport, 2003
Leased to AsiaAtlantique, 2006
Returned to Vanden Air Transport, 2008
Retired from Vanden Air Transport, 2013
Stored at MHV, 2014
Vanden, despite never purchasing the A330 nor the earlier A340s, really supported the A340-500 and A340-600 program. It perfectly supported their desire for long-range travel that no aircraft truly supported yet (with the exception of the 747-400, which they never ordered). They ordered 12 A340-500 for long-range operations into Asia and some long hauls into South America. They ordered 9 A340-600 for operations into North America and Africa. These A340-500s were retired in 2014 and replaced with the 777-200LR which was far superior due to it's twinjet layout and it's greater capacity.
This jet, SE-BBC, was delivered in 2003. In 2006, it was leased to AsiaAtlantique where it operated for 2 years before being returned to Vanden. In 2013, it was retired from Vanden Air Transport and stored at Mojave Air and Space Port. As of 2019, it still sits there to this day without it's engines.
There have been no incidents aboard a Vanden Air Transport A340-500.
