Air Illini was founded in 1968 as a regional airline operating flights within Illinois, with major operations out of Chicago's downtown airport -- Meigs Field -- and Springfield's Capital Airport. As demand grew, Air Illini introduced the HS748 in 1974, with the 44-seat aircraft becoming the largest aircraft to regularly operate out of Meigs Field. MidAmerican Airlines took advantage of the airline's financial troubles in the late 1970s and acquired its operations in 1981, rebranding its service as MidAmerican Illini.

MidAmerican Illini operated MidAmerican's Meigs Field services until the early 1990s using first HS748 aircraft and then Swearington Metro III propjets. Flights operated daily between Meigs Field, Springfield, Quincy and St. Louis, as well as a short-lived service to Detroit City Airport. The brand was folded into MidAmerican Express in 1996, and flights operated out of Meigs Field until the airport's forced closure in 2003.

N103IX entered the MidAmerican fleet in 1975 and was in service until 1986, when it was sold to Nusantara Indonesian Airlines. N103IX operated with 44 Economy Class seats.
