The original SunWest was founded in 1983 out of Phoenix, Arizona. Before the TransitAir merger, it operated both point-to-point and scheduled services from many destinations, such as Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas. While SunWest was still a very successful airline, it never experienced the same explosive growth as TransitAir. By 1994, it operated one DC-9-50, five DC-9-30's and three DC-9-10's.
