TransitAir 737-400

In the early 1990's, TransitAir was a quickly growing airline in the LCC market. Founded in 1985 out of Tampa, Florida, TransitAir had accumulated dozens of old 737-200's and 727-100's, and at the turn of the decade, TransitAir began ordering new 737-300's and 737-400's to replace these old aircraft. Everything seemed to be going well, until 1994, when one of its 737-200's blew up over the Gulf of Mexico following a catastrophic engine failure that punctured a fuel tank. There were no survivors. The investigation found that the engine had several cracked and corroded components. After a fleet wide grounding and an inspection of maintenance records and other aircraft, it was determined that TransitAir had been cutting corners on maintenance, especially on older aircraft to save money while new ones came in to replace them. With a permanently tarnished reputation, TransitAir quietly merged into a small Phoenix-based airline by the name of SunWest.
