From 1980, Air Canadien took delivery of Douglas DC-9-30 and -50 aircraft, eventually reaching a combined total of over forty DC-9s. Beginning in 1983, the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 was also received by Air Canadien. The aircraft was not very different from the older DC-9s, with the only difference being a longer fuselage and new engines. The interior and avionics, however, stayed the same, so only twelve MD-82s were ordered, compared to the 35 MD-88s that would eventually join the fleet, beginning in 1987. The DC-9/MD-80 series would go on to be the backbone of Air Canadien's medium-haul fleet for over a decade.
