5. Boeing 777-300ER | PK-AZK

The year was 2006. Nusantara was at its lowest point financially, with the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 9/11 attacks, the Bali bombings, the 2002-2003 SARS scare, and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami all contributing to falling passenger numbers and revenue. In 2005, a Nusantara Airbus A300 flying from Jakarta to Makassar overran the runway upon landing and burst into flames, with 12 passengers dying. After an investigation and a more thorough evaluation of the Indonesian airline industry, in 2006, the European Union banned Nusantara and other Indonesian airlines from flying into any European countries.

Enter Nusantara's NextGen plan, put together in 2007. The 2007 plan involved ordering a multitude of new aircraft to replace the airline's aging fleet, changing the airline's logo and livery, new staff uniforms, and aiming to reclaim its status as Indonesia's flag carrier. In 2009, its new branding was released, with the N Bird logo inspired by the mythical Garuda Bird and the airline's name. Aircraft deliveries became a near-weekly occasion in Jakarta at its peak, as the airline moved to refresh its image. The EU ban was lifted in 2009, and the airline was finally able to resume operations to Europe with its own planes. Things were looking up.

In 2011, the first Boeing 777-300ER arrived for Nusantara. Equipped with a new Business Class product, an upgraded Economy Class product, and state-of-the-art technology never applied to aircraft in Indonesia, the aircraft brought new levels of comfort and luxury never seen in the Indonesian market. The first Boeing 777-300ER arrived to great fanfare in Jakarta in March, and flew on its inaugural flight to Denpasar/Bali in April. Seven years on, the airline has added on an additional 15 Boeing 777-300ERs, which now fly across the world's skies to destinations such as London and Amsterdam in Europe, Sydney and Melbourne in Oceania, and over the Pacific to Los Angeles via Tokyo-Narita.

Nusantara's Boeing 777-300ERs are equipped with 48 Business Class lie-flat seats and 293 Economy Class seats.
