Air Galicia Douglas DC-8-50 "Ramón Verea"

Though Air Galicia, as many other airlines, became automatically a loyal Boeing customer after the dawn of the Jet Age, they couldn't totally overlook what Douglas had to offer in that matter. So, when they developed a new variant of the DC-8, with longer range, fuel efficient engines and more passenger capacity, it was something that Air Galicia just couldn't miss. They placed a firm order of five airframes, a number that was raised with the years, and used them to fly ultra-long range routes nonstop. While other airlines were flying to eastern Asia and North America, Air Galicia focused more on the Latin American market mostly for cultural and political reasons. That way, at the start of the spring of 1960, Air Galicia inaugurated the first nonstop jet route between Barcelona and Buenos Aires, flying three times a week with the DC-8. The passengers loved the plane, specially the ones flying tourist class, because the seats back there featured footrests, almost the same legroom as in first class, due to the placement of windows, and an unique configuration of five seats per row instead of the usual six. This feature was not only to attract more passengers and give them more comfort but it also gave a strategic advantage to the airline because it allowed the aircraft to fly nonstop to far-flung destinations in South America, that the 707 couldn't fly. With the arrival of the Boeing 747, this plane was not as versatile as the 707 so as to serve in medium haul routes, so they were sold to charter airlines, mostly flying from and to the Canary Islands and to freight airlines.
