With the DC-6 fleet aging rapidly and being outclassed by competitors, RAA ordered 17 Convair CV990s in 1964. These were the fastest passenger jets in the world, cutting the trans-continental routes in half. These jets formed the backbone of the long range domestic fleet for the better part of the 1960s and 1970s.
