Sunwest Airlines 757 (1995-2007 Livery)

Sunwest Airlines began in 1981 with a Boeing 737-200 flying from Albuquerque to Denver, until 1985 the airline fostered a steady growth strategy with the fleet increasing to eight 737s by 1985. A change of ownership in 85' brought in a rapid expansion strategy in order to combat similar start-up carriers, by 1990 the fleet had increased to 34 aircraft consisting of the 737-200/300, Fokker 70 and the flagship Boeing 757 which first arrived in 1986.

This scheme was introduced in 1995 and updated the typeface and featured minor modifications to the 1987 livery, the dark grey and red palette was intended to give the airline a more business like image accompanying its expansion strategy. This aggressive tactic however proved to be the airline's downfall as by 1996 it was in severe financial trouble with Chapter 11 looming on the horizon. The sale to a New Mexico based investment group did little to help the situation despite a rescue package of $200 million and by 2005 the airline was put up for sale.

In January 2006 the San Diego based AeroCalifornia Group having acquired Seattle based Kalakala Airlines in 1998 and made a success out of the carrier the airline announced it would acquire the bankrupt Sunwest as its second major purchase. With strong financial backing and a new management team only time would tell if AeroCalifornia could turn the failing carrier round.
