040 - Itali, Douglas DC4/7

Itali*, a portmanteau of the words Italia and ali (wings) was founded in the aftermath of WW2. After operating a diverse fleet of decomissioned military planes, Itali got its first second hand DC-4 in 1949, launching its transcontinental network with flights to various cities in South America.

Later, Itali got its first brand new Douglas aircraft, the DC-7C I-DSET. The "Sette Mari" were the first truly long range aircrafts of the airline, and were used on transoceanic routes. As such, they were fitted with a comfortable configuration, with six first class private cabins including fold-out berth for night flights, as shown by the presence of extra windows in the back of the fuselage.

* Alitalia powered.
