038 - California Pacific Airways, Lockheed L1011-100

California Pacific Airways (CPA) was a California-based low fare airline operating mainly on intrastate routes, and on a few routes up the western United States. In the early seventies, the airline got its first L1011, with the ideo of operating it on its trunk routes and to Hawaii. However, the fuel crisis hit the airline pretty hard and it went bankrupt, and the Tristar was never operated as intended.

CPA was the only airline to use Lockheed's option of a lower deck lounge in lieu of the forward cargo hold, and had it customised even more with an extra five windows on each side of the lower fuselage. The lounge could be used for passenger seating during take-off and landing, and the FAA required that the forward fuselage was strenghened in case of a belly landing.

Because the seventies were so much fun and everyone was high all the time, CPA decided to paint a smile on its plane, just because they could.

*Note : totally copying PSA

    Smiles all around

    10/10 :D

this is lovely ^_^ I love the psa livery and this is a nice anecdote

    Uuuuuuuuuu, secret lounges.

    Just a quick detail.

This is a -1 Tristar. -100 models and beyond have a fairing extension below the number 2 engine intake which differentiates it from -1s.
